Global Determination Fleet on its Way to Gaza Targeted by UAVs
Bosnia and Herzegovina-native Küçükaytekin, who joined the fleet from Bosnia, made evaluations regarding the targeting of the Global Determination Fleet by UAVs in the early hours of September 24th to break the Israeli blockade and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Küçükaytekin stated that drones started flying over the fleet in the early hours of September 23rd, mentioning that surveillance drones had been circling the fleet in recent days, but this time they started flying earlier. “These drones we are talking about were the long-range ones with red and green lights on them. By the time it was 01:30 (September 24th), we received the first attack news. They left various chemical powders on our 2 ships. After the first attack, the fleet developed a new tactic, the front ships slowed down, the rear ones sped up, and we regrouped the fleet.
After our regrouping, multiple drone attacks occurred back to back. The contents of these attacks were different. Some drones directly targeted the ships, while others threw sound bombs near them. Particularly, efforts were made to damage the sails of the sailing ships. We believe that those who organized the attacks have a list of which ship, and who participated. They made 3 consecutive attacks especially to damage the sails of specific ships, where the parliamentarians were present.”
Küçükaytekin mentioned that some ships were not damaged at all, stating that the attacks continued until morning, and they observed the last drones moving away around 07:00. “Drones carry dust in a balloon-like object and drop it on the ship,” Küçükaytekin said, emphasizing that no one was injured in the attacks. “Only one of the mentioned ships had an unknown powder dropped inside. Emphasizing that they set out as a completely civilian movement, Küçükaytekin reported that they requested the United Nations (UN) to protect the fleet from the first day.
“We are continuing our journey,” Küçükaytekin said they received news that the Italian Ministry of Defense directed a navy to the region to support the fleet, stating that Italy was one of the countries that supported them the most. “While the attacks continued, we continued our way. With the start of the attacks, the fleet regrouped, we were going a bit more scattered. We are still continuing our way, there is no halt in any way. The sails of the 2 ships we mentioned have damage, they are being repaired technically. We are continuing our journey.”
The Global Determination Fleet, which set sail from Greece to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, was targeted by UAVs in Greece’s search and rescue (SAR) responsibility area.
